BIO
Toby is an internationally respected leadership scholar. Her research focuses on virtues-based approaches to leader and leadership development as well as leadership in the volunteer sector.
Prior to academia, Dr Newstead worked extensively in the corporate sector, gaining practical expertise in corporate change, leadership development, and professional communications. This real-world experience informs her research and lends a practical dimension to her findings and publications. Dr Newstead’s research is theoretically robust, evidence-based, and practically relevant.
With a commitment to producing excellent research with real world impact, Dr Newstead has published extensively in top-quality academic journals and practitioner publications. Her research outputs are focused on explaining and enabling the development and practice of good leadership.
Driven by a desire to make a tangible impact, Dr Newstead actively engages in place-based industry-funded research projects, directly contributing to the health and wellbeing of people and communities around Tasmania.
In addition to local impact, Dr Newstead maintains a thriving international network of research collaborators, fostering knowledge exchange, co-authored publications, and cross-cultural understanding in the field of leadership. She has co-convened and presented at multiple international management and leadership conferences.
Recognized locally and internationally as a leading leadership scholar, Dr Newstead frequently shares her research findings and expertise with industry professionals. She facilitates a state-wide initiative, “Talking Leadership”, which serves as a platform for engaging with industry stakeholders, facilitating meaningful conversations, and driving innovation in leadership practices. She also regularly delivers keynote presentations and engaging industry facilitation.
