Teaching expertise

All models are wrong, but some are useful. Stas Shabala’s teaching targets the development of a difficult but crucial skill: constructing realistic yet tractable representations of real-world situations using relevant physics concepts. Shabala has designed constructively aligned units, including active and blended learning components. Quantitative problem-solving skills developed in these classes are applicable to a wide range of real world problems, far beyond physics and astronomy.

Research Supervision
Please get in touch with Stas if you are interested in a PhD in astrophysics or geodesy, particularly relating to the physics of galaxies and / or Active Galactic Nuclei. Available projects span a broad range of science and techniques, including analytical modelling, numerical simulations, statistical analysis of large data sets, and hands-on observations using our very own AuScope VLBI array. Prospective candidates are expected to have a strong track record (1st class Honours for Australian / New Zealand applicants; Masters or equivalent plus good English for overseas candidates).

This unit provides students with a detailed understanding of fisheries biology and population dynamics. Biological concepts include how morphology, behaviour, habitat preferences and life history strategies affect the exploitation of fisheries taxa. The unit also covers the logistical and quantitative methodologies associated with undertaking a biological investigation into the population dynamics of a species. These assessments include abundance estimation, reproductive biology, age determination, dietary analysis and biological modelling.
