BIO

Dr. Myriam Lacharité is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. She uses and develops planning tools to support marine resource management and conservation. Myriam's work focuses on marine geospatial modelling, remote sensing technology to monitor change in marine environments, seabed mapping applications and integrated risk assessments for the blue economy. Her current research examines how spatial planning tools can support decision-making for aquaculture siting and the development of offshore marine industries.

Before joining the University of Tasmania, Myriam was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Applied Oceans Research Group at the Nova Scotia Community College (Canada), where she examined how seafloor habitat maps can inform monitoring designs of marine protected areas. A Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (National; Government of Canada) supported part of her tenure at the College. Myriam completed her PhD in Oceanography in 2016 at Dalhousie University (Canada). Her PhD thesis examined the environmental factors influencing the distribution and abundance of epibenthos in deep waters in the Gulf of Maine (northwest Atlantic Ocean). During her PhD, she gained experience in the analysis of underwater imagery (ROV), ocean circulation models, and geophysical seafloor data.
