Michael did his degrees in New Zealand: BSc(Hons) in mathematics, with a major in physics, LTCL (teaching, flute), and PhD (Phylogenetics).
He is a professor in the discipline of Mathematics in the School of Natural Sciences. He is interested in all kinds of problems, primarily in the life sciences but also in digital history, that can be solved using discrete mathematics, computational methods, modelling, and statistics.
