MEDIA INTERVIEW
24 Apr 2024
Media interview for Private Forests Tasmania. This video briefly canvasses benefits and risks associated with planting trees on farm associated with carbon offsetting or insetting. Content includes the rate at which trees sequester carbon, carbon credits (Australian Carbon Credit Units or ACCUs), biodiversity and agricultural production benefits associated with trees. A brief discussion of regulation and administration associated with participation in carbon markets is included (ie., cases in which land managers trade carbon credits). Carbon 'insetting' - where carbon is sequestered within the enterprise is accounted for but not traded - as well as opportunities associated with plantation forestry or environmental plantings are also mentioned. In this first episode of PIPS 4 Profit Podcasts, Program Coordinator, Marguerite White, and Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture Extension and Communication Horticulturalist, Michele Buntain explore the benefits of soil organic matter in apple and pear orchards, and the pros and cons of carbon market "offsetting" schemes and "insetting" programs. The conversation with guests, Professor of Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Melbourne and Director of the Primary Industries Climate Challenges Centre, Richard Eckard, and Professor of Sustainable Agriculture at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, Matt Harrison provides listeners with a trusted insight into what growers need to consider both short and long-term, and the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) targets, agendas and policies at play in the broader international and national context. These are two of Australia's leading experts in carbon farming and accounting towards carbon neutral agriculture applying their knowledge to apple and pear growing conditions, systems and markets. Visit the PIPS 4 Profit : https://apal.org.au/pips-4-profit-program/ The PIPS 4 Profit Program has been funded Hort Innovation, using the apple and pear research and development levies, contributions from the Australian Government and co-investment from the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture and Agriculture Victoria. The PIPS 4 Profit: Building Sustainable Soils project (AP22003) is supported regionally by Pomewest, Lenswood Apples and the NSW Department of Primary Industries. Hort Innovation is the grower-owned, not-for-profit research and development corporation for Australian Horticulture. https://www.buzzsprout.com/2240977/episodes/14915568
