BIO

Dr Mark Dewsbury is passionate about sustainability and has been involved in the sustainable design of commercial and residential buildings in the public and private sectors for more than 30 years.
He is currently a Senior Lecturer and Director of the Tasmania Architectural Science Laboratory (TASL), within Architecture & Design, at the University of Tasmania. His research focuses on methods to inform design and to improve the construction, durability, thermal performance, indoor environmental qualities within buildings. As a member of the NatHERS Technical Advisory Committee and the ABCB’s Condensation technical working group, his research provides input for the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme, CHENATH, the AccuRate building simulation programs and the condensation requirements within the national building regulations. Mark has undertaken contract research for a broad range of industry and government partners including the CSIRO, State and Federal government agencies. He is also a principal partner at Carawah, which specialises low energy dwellings.

Before Mark's move to Tasmania in 1998, he worked with the public and private sectors. His early industry based training was with a national retailer and included retail store planning and design, and merchandising methods for the refurbishment of existing and establishment of traditional and new concept businesses. A career change to the public sector lead to roles as Properties Officer and Senior Properties Manager within the education sector, which included office block refurbishments, assisting in departmental planning and the responsibility for all refurbishment, new works and master planning for eleven TAFE colleges. Mark's move to Tasmania coincided with a return to full time study and the establishment of Carawah. The principle focus of Carawah has been the design and documentation of low to zero energy buildings. Mark's shift into full-time academic employment with UTAS has seen a strong research and teaching focus on the technics of Architecture, often known as Architectural Science or Building Physics, with the aim of providing sustainable systems for our future built environment.

Professional practice
Mark is a principle partner at Carawah, an architectural design practice. Many of Carawah's buildings have been featured in various publications or been made available as open homes for sustainable house activities. Projects include Tasmania's first load bearing straw bale house and Australia's first timber platform supported rammed earth floors. Designs have also included the use of mass-timber elements as thermal mass, and the design of reed bed and vermilfiltration wastewater treatment systems.

Administrative expertise
Mark's experience in business and project management has included employment by Woolworths Ltd, Bi-Lo, Department of Corrective Services, TAFE NSW, Department of Training and Education Co-ordination and Carawah. The management roles have included the planning, delivery and management of human, financial and physical resources within private sector and public sector business enterprise models. This has ranged from the small scale practice needs of Carawah to the national and regional needs for Woolworths Ltd and TAFE NSW respectively.

Within his current role as a Senior Lecturer and Post-Doctoral researcher, Mark has managed research projects that have been won via national competitive grant schemes. This has included project development, competitive grant applications, project management, human , physical and financial resource management, and the provision of task specific research reports and publications.
