BIO
Malcolm S. Johnson is the Manager Environmental Sustainability for Huon Valley Council. In this role, he is responsible for managing the Council's Climate Change Strategy, Natural Resource Management strategy, and waste education. This work includes designing a plan to mainstream climate action across Council teams, consolidating and refining existing climate plans, engaging the community on both climate knowledge and climate anxiety, and any duties aligned with the position description. He is currently investigating the need for innovative approaches to communicate with at-risk coastal communities about the futures of managed/planned retreat.
Malcolm recently graduated from UTAS with a PhD in Geography and Environmental Studies. His thesis is titled: Changing Coastalscapes: Advancing methods to support local climate adaptation. This research focused on climate change adaptation, socio-ecological systems, and perceptions of landscape values/risks. He has published several scholarly publications and book chapters. Malcolm was awarded the American Australian Association Graduate Education Scholarship for 2022.
Before the commencement of candidature, Malcolm was the National Coral Reef Management Fellow (2017-2020) for the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands where he co-developed a watershed management plan with community members of the island of Rota. He also served as a Coastal Resource Management volunteer (2015-2017) with the Peace Crops in Guimaras, Philippines where he helped to establish a marine protected area and co-designed an integrated coastal resource management plan. Malcolm completed his MA at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (2012-2014) in international environmental policy with a focus on coastal resource management.
Beyond his current academic pursuits, Malcolm is part of an ongoing Arts Tasmania grant centred on the freshwater eels of Tasmania. This project has resulted in performances, publications, and primary/secondary school lessons.
