BIO

Dr Michael A. Guerzoni is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the School of Social Sciences in the College of Arts, Law and Education. His criminological research examines organisational culture, deviance, and crime prevention, with a particular focus on the safeguarding of children within religious institutions. Mike also undertakes sociological research on the education and wellbeing of Indigenous students.

Mike trained as a qualitative criminologist at the University of Tasmania, being awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Criminology) in 2018. Before his appointment to the School of Social Sciences in 2021, he worked in a collection of research, teaching and professional roles, serving in the School of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Law, and the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Aboriginal Leadership at the University of Tasmania. Mike is a descendent of the Trawulwuy people of Tasmania’s northeast and post-war Italian migrants.

Mike coordinates the units HGA107 Crime and Criminal Justice, HGA237/337 Juvenile Justice and Child Protection, and in 2025 is scheduled to coordinate HGA238 Special Topics in Criminology. He has previously coordinated and continues to contribute to HAB308 Indigenous Justice Issues. He also serves as Chair of the University Research Committee, a sub-committee of Academic Senate of the University of Tasmania.
