BIO

Jane Nielsen is a Professor in Law at the School of Law in the College of Arts, Law and Education. Jane has a combined degree in Commerce/Law, and is admitted to practice Law in the Supreme Court of Tasmania and the High Court of Australia. Before joining the University of Tasmania, Jane practised as a solicitor in Hobart, Tasmania. She left legal practice to undertake doctoral studies at the University of Tasmania. Jane's research focused on the intersection between intellectual property law and competition law, particularly as it related to the patenting of biotechnology innovation.

Jane's research interests have expanded, and she now researches across a broad range of law and technology issues. In addition to intellectual property law, Jane's research projects consider legal and ethical issues surrounding genomic data sharing, and the return of data to participants in genomics research. Jane's research also examines the regulation of a range of innovative health technologies, including bioprinting, genome editing, stem cells, AI in medicine and diagnostics. Jane was an Associate Investigator with the Australian Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science, based at the University of Wollongong.

Jane has been a member of the Centre for Law and Genetics at the University of Tasmania since 2000, and is currently Deputy Director. From 2019 to 2021 Jane was Associate Head (Research) in the Faculty of Law, supporting Law researchers to maintain the Law School's reputation for high quality research.
