BIO
Dr David Lees is a Senior Lecturer and Graduate Research Coordinator in the School of Nursing. David's teaching, research and community engagement activities are primarily focused on understanding, enhancing and implementing contemporary approaches to mental health care.
In teaching nursing students, David emphasises the importance of mental health care for all future nurses, whatever their chosen area of practice. Contemporary approaches to mental health care highlight broadly relevant principles, including the importance of person-centred, strengths focused engagement that is empowering, holistic in its focus, and that fosters hope, positive relationships, social inclusion, and the fulfilment of personal goals.
David has successfully drawn upon his knowledge and skills in mental health care in various research projects, including evaluation of suicide prevention programs, and people’s experiences of healthcare in the context of suicidal crisis. David continues to conduct research in suicide prevention, as well as in healthy ageing and the provision of mindfulness-based resilience training in healthcare settings. David has successfully supervised higher degree research candidates to completion and is experienced in qualitative and mixed methods research approaches, with a particular interest in Participatory Action Research.
